Volunteer Spotlight | Carol Fairbanks
The Spotlight is back! Each week we will be introducing you to members of our community: employees, volunteers, and fighters!
When did you start volunteering at 110 Fitness?
I first began volunteering at 110 when helping to plan for the second annual gala.
What inspired you to become a 110 Fitness volunteer?
I happened to see a couple of games the parkies were playing and I wanted to join the fun! What really inspired me to volunteer was this: early on when 110 Fitness began I was there for the 5:00 pm HIIT Boxing Class. I saw two women crying and hugging. Dangerous Deb had bought Krusher the climbing rope to prepare for the Spartan. It was so moving. I decided then I really wanted to get to know these loving, caring people.
What class(es) do you volunteer for?
I volunteer for Rock Steady on Thursdays, both sessions. It is my favorite day of the week. I would like to volunteer every day but my job keeps me occupied the rest of the week.
What do(did) you do for work? Or what do you do with your free time when you’re not at 110?
I am a church administrator at House of Prayer Lutheran Church where Rob Lacy (some of you may have known him) was a very active member, including singing in the choir. I enjoy my job. When not working, I enjoy traveling. I recently went on my first cruise with my husband; a Christmas gift from my son and his wife, also on their first cruise. My destinations are pretty much pre-set: I have 3 sisters in Ohio, one in NY and my children live in NC and Australia. Sadly, they have chosen not to have children. So no grandchildren for us. Hence, the interest in traveling. We have been on a few international trips which we enjoyed very much.
What is your favorite part about volunteering?
My favorite part is seeing the effort and focus and determination on the faces of the boxers. Their never ending fight is a true inspiration for everyone. Their positive attitude is amazing. I think the boxers have helped me more than I can ever help them. The gratitude from everyone is overwhelming.
Any fun hobbies you’d like to share?
Two years ago I began taking piano lessons. I have never played a musical instrument in my life. When 5 year olds learn piano they are like little sponges. When 68 year olds learn piano not so much. When all the little children perform at a recital for their parents at the end of the school year, my teacher asks me to participate. She wants everyone to know you can start piano as an adult. It was so far out of my comfort zone that I did it . I have been in 4 or 5 recitals now. It’s challenging and nerve wracking but fun!
How has 110 Fitness impacted your life outside of the gym?
Seeing all the people with PD at 110 smiling and happy and having fun with all they are going through helps put in perspective any small problems I may have. That remains with me throughout each day. Volunteering at 110 Fitness is the most rewarding thing I have ever done!
