Boxer Spotlight | Steve Lorusso

The Spotlight is back! Each week we will be introducing you to members of our community: employees, volunteers, and fighters!

When were you diagnosed with Parkinson’s?

I met with Dr. Widad Abou-Chaar at Brigham and Women’s on 4/2/25. Her assessment of me was: Steve Lorusso is a 65 y.o. old male patient referred for evaluation of gait changes of 1 year duration, described as a shuffling gait, festination and occasional freezing, without tremors, cognitive changes or dysautonomic features. On exam, he has mild cogwheel rigidity and bradykinesia, more pronounced on the L side, and an intermittent shuffling/festinating gait, all of which are suggestive of a diagnosis of Parkinsonism.

When did you start coming to 110 Fitness?

I started 110 Fitness in November 2025. After doing some physical therapy at “Bay State Physical therapy” in Pembroke.

What’s your favorite class or activity at 110?

I like Boxing class , and Tai Chi. I want to do the pool and the bikes when I can fit into my schedule. Hopefully soon!

What do(did) you do for work?

I am retired now. My main occupation was as an Engineer. Just a brief summary, not all:

I am a licensed Massachusetts First Class Engineer. I was in charge of operating power plants, large boilers, generating stations, steam turbines, gas turbine, and electrical generation distribution.

I also worked as a facility manager for Polaroid’s three power plants at; Norwood, Waltham and New Bedford sites.

Then I was at Logan Airport, overseeing maintenance and operation of the Delta baggage handling systems and building maintenance of the cargo building and Hanger building.

Then I worked for the Massachusetts Department of Public Safety as a District Engineering inspector and retired from the state.

Then in between all of that I was playing drums for a lot of the big name oldies acts from the 50’s, 60’s & 70’s.

Some of who I played with , The Drifters, The Coasters, The Crystals, The Olympics, Dicky Lee, Dale Hawkins, Johnny Preston, Chris Montez, Kathy Young, Tommy Roe,  Big Bopper jr,  Freddy “Boom Boom” Cannon, Shanana….  And more…

What would you like us to know about you and your family? Any fun hobbies you’d like to share?

Here are some YOUTUBE  links of some of the shows I’ve played over the years, I’ve collected a lot of these from different people who I saw filming the shows and I just asked them for a copy. Kept them for years and then after I retired, I started putting them together. Most of which were old VHS Tapes that I had to digitize a lot of work but at least I saved them.

I also recorded a lot of original music with my Daughter “Victoria” aka – Tori May and put together some music videos of those. Her very first show she sang with my band “The Wing It Band” when she was eight years old for a Make a Wish Foundation fundraiser, that we did every year for a long time. I have that on video in the Tori link below. Tori is now 33 years old.. Wow Time fly’s . I have so much video that I work on a little at a time. I also do weddings (non-Traditional) more of  behind the seen type of video. Makes it more funny and interesting. I do those with Dottie (My wife) who is the brains behind a lot of the ideas for the non- traditional stuff….

How has 110 Fitness impacted your life outside of the gym?

I feel it has given me a different outlook on life in general. With a whole different feeling of awareness of my abilities and the challenges that I face going forward, and with the hope that we will be part of finding a cure someday. That would be awesome!
