When did you start volunteering at 110 Fitness?

I began volunteering in July of 2020 during the Covid Pandemic. Wearing a mask was difficult for many people but witnessing the Boxers overcome their day -to -day challenges, complete intense exercise routines-all (while wearing their masks) made me grateful for my own health.

What inspired you to become a 110 Fitness volunteer?

I’ve always felt drawn to help others in my life. It was heroic to see the medical professionals across the country during the pandemic. I was alone during Covid since my husband was an essential worker. I had time to give. Going to 110 Fitness truly gave me a reason to get up, to show up, which I am eternally thankful and here we are six years later.

What class(es) do you volunteer for?

I have been a cornerperson for 10:00 and 11:30 on Tuesday and Thursday classes.

What do(did) you do for work? Or what do you do with your free time when you’re not at 110?

I was a reporter and photojournalist for 15 years for several weekly papers including my hometown of Whitman and Hanson, where I reside. I have always loved community events, human interest stories and capturing smiles in my lens. I am proud to look back on amazing things in our small towns. I love that printed newspaper clippings of parades and school events are holding history and childhood memories in homes all over the South Shore. There were emotionally charged stories that I covered over the years as well…some details permanent in my memory. However, a big victory for me was photographing Justin Bieber in concert at the Boston Garden. Yep, and some pretty cool stuff. I still have my media badge. I still enjoy photography. I make greeting cards using different mediums.

I contribute my art in hopes of sending joy to our boxers and family members. It shows a deep sense of 110 community when we take a moment to sign and send loving wishes to a Boxer who needs it. I love that my art contributes to that chain of goodness

What is your favorite part about volunteering?

Oh, many things!! I love seeing a boxer getting stronger – Hearing “I don’t need my cane anymore” or a bucket list tale of the once in a lifetime trip and its completion.

I recall one Boxer who talked about dancing with his wife on their anniversary despite his stutter step and that story still makes me smile. It is just gratifying to know they “fight back” and continue daily to give all they can to improve their health.

I humbly assist in that process. Each day as a volunteer includes: boxing, balance, and somedays intertwine with tears when they are struggling. I’m available for a hug or handing out tissues. I especially love clapping in unity for the victory part of morning warmups!

Any fun hobbies you’d like to share?

I love art. I enjoy junk journaling (little bit like a vision board with magazines, good old fashion glue and scissors). I deeply love my family. I have been married for almost 30 years and we have raised two daughters.

I speak Greek with my husband’s family. We had a traditional Big Fat Greek wedding… yes, just like the movie.

We are now grandparents to three grandsons -ages 3 1/2, 9 and 6 months.

We love walking and enjoy being physically active.

I play the piano. I love taking pictures every day.

How has 110 Fitness impacted your life outside of the gym?

I would say obtaining knowledge and skills to assist my own aging parents has been extremely beneficial. I’m more confident. I smile more. I genuinely care about these strong, resilient Boxers. I feel like I belong to something with immense purpose. I believe God puts us someplace for a reason. I think teaching Boxers to “take big steps”, stand up straight and reposition the feet to remain balanced has helped in my life as well.

I’m a better person and I’m blessed to be a part of 110.
